The site of Ueda Castle, the stronghold built in 1583 by Sanada Masayuki that famously repelled far larger Tokugawa armies twice. Today the ruins form a park around the restored South, North and West Yagura turrets and the Higashi-Koguchi gate, with stone walls rising from the old Amagafuchi cliff. It is one of Nagano's best-known cherry blossom and autumn foliage spots.
