Kairaku-en in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, is one of Japan's three great gardens, celebrated above all for its extraordinary collection of over 3,000 plum trees of some 100 varieties. The garden was designed in 1842 by Tokugawa Nariaki, the lord of the Mito domain, as a place of relaxation for both himself and the public. Each spring, the garden erupts in a spectacular sea of plum blossoms, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors.
