Nioza Historical Road

Usuki, Japan

🏯 Landmark

A narrow lane cut through solidified volcanic ash on the hill behind Usuki Castle, lined with samurai residences, white plaster walls and the earthen gates of a dozen temples. The stone-paved slopes and the deep cutting known as Kuroshima-zaka preserve the feel of an Edo-period castle town more completely than almost anywhere else in Kyushu, and on the two nights of the Usuki Takeyoi festival the whole route is lit only by bamboo lanterns.
