30th Usuki Takeyoi Bamboo Lantern Festival

Two November nights when the old castle town of Usuki turns off its lights and is lit instead by tens of thousands of bamboo lanterns set along the stone lanes of Nioza, the castle ruins and the merchant streets. The festival retells the legend of Princess Hannya, whose spirit is carried back into the port by boat, and the procession that follows is its centrepiece.
