Miidera Temple (Onjo-ji)

Miidera, formally known as Onjo-ji, is one of the most important temples in Japan and the head temple of the Tendai Jimon sect. Founded in 672, the sprawling complex overlooking Lake Biwa contains over 100 buildings, including a National Treasure bell tower with a bell famous since the Tale of Benkei. The hilltop observation deck offers panoramic views of Lake Biwa, making it a popular spot for cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage.
