Sugawara Shrine (Ueno Tenjingu)

A shrine in the castle town of Iga-Ueno dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, guardian deity of the old Ueno district. It is the home of the Ueno Tenjin Festival, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage parade of demon processions and nine ornate danjiri floats held every October. The poet Matsuo Basho, born in Iga, dedicated his first published verses here.
