A hot-spring village tucked into the mountains of Nikko, Tochigi. Legend holds that Heike clan survivors of the Battle of Dan-no-ura hid here, and sites such as Heike no Sato keep that refugee culture alive. The village is best known for its illuminations: bamboo lanterns along the river in autumn and the snow-hut Kamakura Festival in winter.
