Standing 300 metres above Osaka, the Harukas 300 observation deck at Abeno Harukas has a compelling new reason to visit this spring. From April 28 through July 22, the tower is collaborating with the hit anime Frieren: Beyond Journey's End for an immersive themed event that transforms the sky-high space into a setting straight from the series.
About the anime
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (葬送のフリーレン) follows an elven mage named Frieren who, after defeating the Demon King alongside her party, spends the next thousand years slowly retracing their journey — reckoning with the passage of time and the human lives she outlived. The series won the Manga Taisho Award and was adapted into an acclaimed anime that aired in 2023–2024. Its themes of memory, loss, and the meaning of a life well-lived resonated deeply with audiences across generations.
The collaboration: Frieren at the Summit
The event is titled "Frieren at the Summit: An Adventure 300m Above Ground" (高層のフリーレン じゃあ行こうか、地上約300Mの冒険へ。). Taking place primarily on the 58th-floor observation area, it features:
- Original panels and artwork created exclusively for this collaboration
- Photo spots designed to recreate scenes from the series against the Osaka cityscape
- Narrative story panels guiding visitors through as a walkable experience
- Themed merchandise available only at the venue
The concept is unusually coherent: Frieren has walked the world for centuries, now looking down at a modern city from 300 metres. The anime's themes of height — metaphorical and literal, the journey's end vs the summit — translate naturally into the physical experience of standing above Osaka's grid.
About Abeno Harukas
Abeno Harukas opened in 2014 as Japan's tallest building at 300 metres. The complex houses a Kintetsu department store, an art museum (16F), a hotel, and the Harukas 300 observation deck spanning floors 58–60. On a clear day, views extend to the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, the Kyoto mountains, and occasionally Awaji Island.
Floor 58 is the semi-outdoor sky walk where the Frieren event space is concentrated. Floor 60 is the fully enclosed top-floor lounge with 360° views and floor-to-ceiling windows — one of Osaka's finest sunset spots.
Getting there
Abeno Harukas sits directly above Osaka Abenobashi Station on the Kintetsu Line, and a 2-minute walk from Tennoji Station on the JR Osaka Loop Line and Osaka Metro Midosuji Line. From Namba, take the Midosuji Line southbound to Tennoji (5 minutes).
Harukas 300 admission: adults ¥1,500, children ¥700. Frieren collaboration merchandise is sold separately and may sell out during popular weekend visits.
Tips
- Book observation deck tickets online to avoid queues, especially during Golden Week
- The best sunset views are from west-facing windows — arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset
- Combine with the Abeno Harukas Art Museum on floor 16 if a related exhibition is running
- The Kintetsu department store basement food hall is excellent for pre- or post-visit snacks
Combining with Tennoji & Shinsekai
The Tennoji area rewards an afternoon of exploration. Tennoji Park reopened its free-entry green zone, and the adjacent Tennoji Zoo is one of Japan's older zoos. Five minutes on foot brings you to Shinsekai — the retro entertainment district built to mimic Paris in the 1910s, now famous for kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers), old-style game arcades, and the Tsutenkaku Tower. It's a neighborhood that feels nothing like tourist-focused Osaka, and is all the better for it.
