Myriad Lanterns Memorial

The Myriad Lanterns Memorial at Todai-ji is a breathtaking Obon ceremony in which thousands of small candle lanterns illuminate the Great Buddha Hall and surrounding grounds on the evening of August 15th. Worshippers light lanterns in memory of ancestors while the giant bronze Buddha presides over the glowing scene in silent benediction. It is one of the most serene and spiritually moving Obon experiences in all of Japan.
