Obi Castle Ruins

The ruins of Obi Castle, seat of the Ito clan for close to three centuries, sit at the heart of Nichinan's old samurai quarter. The main gate, demolished in the Meiji era, was rebuilt in 1978 using century-old Obi cedar, and the stone walls, cedar-lined approach, Matsuo-no-Maru residence and castle history museum survive. Together with the surrounding samurai streets it forms a nationally designated preservation district nicknamed the "Little Kyoto of Kyushu".
