The oldest shrine in Nara city, founded in 593 AD during the Asuka period. Revered as 'Komori Myojin' (child-guardian deity), it is dedicated to the protection of children and safe childbirth. The shrine hosts the famous Saikusanomatsuri (Lily Festival) each June, one of Nara's most elegant traditional ceremonies.
