Founded in 1063 by Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is Kamakura's most important Shinto shrine and a symbol of the city. The approach from the beach along Wakamiya-oji street leads to the grand main hall atop a stone staircase.
