A National Treasure Zen temple in Matsushima, one of Japan's Three Great Views. Originally founded in 828, the temple was rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1609. The ornate main hall features stunning gold-leaf paintings by the Kano school, while the surrounding rock caves contain centuries-old Buddhist carvings.
