One of the Tohoku region most important Zen temples, located in Matsushima — one of Japan Three Scenic Views. Originally founded in 828, it was magnificently rebuilt by the feudal lord Date Masamune in 1609. The main hall and kitchen (kuri) are designated National Treasures, with elaborate carvings and gold-leaf paintings.
