Jotenji Temple

A Rinzai Zen temple founded in 1242 in the heart of old Hakata by the monk Enni Ben'en with the backing of Chinese merchant Xie Guoming. Jotenji is revered as the birthplace of Japanese noodle and manju culture — stone monuments in the grounds mark udon, soba and steamed buns as having been introduced here — and it is also credited as the origin of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. The raked stone garden Sentooteien and the adjacent Hakata Sennen-mon gate make it one of the quietest corners of the temple district a few minutes' walk from Hakata Station.
