One of Tohoku's most revered Shinto shrines, Shiogama Shrine sits atop Ichinomori Hill overlooking Matsushima Bay. Dedicated to the deity of salt-making and maritime safety, it is the ichinomiya (highest-ranked shrine) of Mutsu Province. The shrine features 202 stone steps on the front approach, beautiful cherry trees including the rare Shiogama-zakura variety, and hosts the Shiogama Minato Matsuri boat festival every July.
