When people think of Hokkaido in spring, they picture May's cherry blossoms in Matsumae or the lavender fields of Furano still months away. But late March in Sapporo has its own quiet appeal — the snow is retreating, the air is crisp, and the city comes alive with indoor culture, incredible food, and a sense of anticipation. This year, Sapporo Factory is hosting two back-to-back events that make the last weekend of March worth the trip north.
Sapporo Factory: From Beer Brewery to Cultural Hub
Sapporo Factory is one of those places that tells a story just by existing. Built on the site of Japan's first beer brewery — the original Kaitakushi Beer Brewery established in 1876 — this sprawling complex has been reinvented as a shopping, dining, and event center while preserving its gorgeous red-brick heritage buildings. The soaring glass atrium connects old and new, and in late March, the last traces of winter light filter through in a way that feels almost cinematic.
You can still see the original brick chimney and brewery buildings, now designated as Sapporo Heritage Sites. It's a fitting location for the events happening this spring.
Disney Authorized Artist Masei Exhibition (March 27–30)
The Disney Authorized Artist Masei Exhibition brings a unique fusion of Disney magic and Japanese artistic sensibility to Sapporo Factory. Masei is one of a select group of artists worldwide authorized by Disney to create original works featuring beloved characters, reinterpreting them through a distinctive personal style that blends pop art energy with traditional craftsmanship.
The exhibition showcases original paintings and limited-edition prints, and visitors can purchase exclusive works not available elsewhere. Whether you're a Disney collector or simply appreciate art that bridges cultures, this intimate four-day exhibition is worth timing your visit around.
Exhibition Details:
- Dates: March 27–30, 2026
- Venue: Sapporo Factory
- Admission: Free (purchases available)
- Hours: Check Sapporo Factory website for daily schedule
NATURE BEAT JAM 2026 (March 28–29)
Overlapping with the Disney exhibition, NATURE BEAT JAM 2026 transforms Sapporo Factory into a live music venue. This two-day music festival celebrates the connection between music and nature, featuring artists who draw inspiration from Hokkaido's landscapes — from forest ambient to upbeat folk-rock.
The festival takes advantage of the Factory's unique architecture, with performances echoing through the brick-walled spaces that once housed brewing equipment. The combination of historic industrial atmosphere and live music creates something you won't find at any outdoor summer festival.
Festival Details:
- Dates: March 28–29, 2026
- Venue: Sapporo Factory

Eating Your Way Through Sapporo
Let's be honest: half the reason to visit Sapporo is the food. Late March is an ideal time because the winter seafood season is still going strong while spring ingredients start appearing.
Miso Ramen
Sapporo is the birthplace of miso ramen, and the competition here is fierce. Ramen Alley (Ramen Yokocho) in Susukino packs eight shops into a narrow lane, each with decades of history. For a modern take, head to Sumire in Nakajima-koen — their rich, lard-topped miso ramen is legendary. Expect to wait, but it's worth every minute.
Soup Curry
Sapporo's other signature dish is soup curry — a fragrant, spice-forward curry broth loaded with large-cut vegetables, tender chicken, and served with rice on the side. Garaku near Tanuki-koji is a local favorite, with a cozy basement atmosphere and complex spice blends.
Seafood at Nijo Market
Nijo Market (二条市場) has been Sapporo's kitchen since 1903. In late March, look for the season's last uni (sea urchin), plump hotate (scallops), and enormous king crab legs. Many stalls offer kaisendon (seafood rice bowls) that you can customize. Get there early — the best stalls sell out by noon.
Craft Beer
Fitting for a city built on brewing, Sapporo has a thriving craft beer scene. The Sapporo Beer Museum (a short walk from Sapporo Factory) offers tastings of the classic brand, but for craft exploration, try Craft Beer Market near Sapporo Station or Beer Bar North Island in Tanuki-koji.
Early Spring Walks
Late March in Sapporo means temperatures hovering around 3–8°C, with snow melting but not yet gone. It's a unique time to explore:
Odori Park
Sapporo's central green spine stretches 1.5 km through downtown. In late March, the trees are still bare but the park starts hosting food stalls and small markets as the city shakes off winter. The TV Tower at the east end offers panoramic views of the grid-pattern city against the surrounding mountains.
Hokkaido Shrine (Hokkaido Jingu)
Nestled in the forested Maruyama Park, Hokkaido Jingu feels like stepping into another world. The tall evergreen trees create a cathedral-like atmosphere even before the cherry blossoms arrive (Sapporo's sakura typically peaks in early May). The shrine's architecture blends Shinto tradition with Hokkaido's frontier spirit.
Former Hokkaido Government Office
The iconic red-brick "Red Brick Office" (Akarenga) is one of Sapporo's most photographed buildings. Its gardens are still waking up in late March, but the building's neo-Baroque architecture is stunning in any season. The interior houses free historical exhibits about Hokkaido's development.
Getting There & Around
- By Air: New Chitose Airport serves Sapporo with frequent flights from Tokyo Haneda/Narita (1h35m), Osaka Kansai (2h), and other cities. Airport express train to Sapporo Station takes 37 minutes (¥1,150).
- By Shinkansen: The Hokkaido Shinkansen currently runs from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto (about 4 hours), with a connecting limited express to Sapporo (3.5 hours more). The Sapporo extension is under construction.
- City Transit: Sapporo's subway has three lines covering most attractions. A one-day pass costs ¥830 on weekdays, ¥520 on weekends/holidays (a weekend visit saves money).
- Sapporo Factory Access: 10-minute walk from Bus Center-mae Station (Tozai Line) or 15 minutes from Sapporo Station.
Practical Tips
- Weather: Late March in Sapporo averages 3–8°C. Bring layers — mornings are cold, afternoons can feel spring-like. Sidewalks may be icy; wear shoes with good grip.
- Crowds: Late March is between peak seasons (winter sports end, spring tourism hasn't started), so hotels are reasonably priced and attractions are uncrowded.
- Combine with: Otaru (canal town, 30 minutes by train — try the famous sushi and LeTAO cheesecake), or Jozankei Onsen (hot spring valley, 1 hour by bus from downtown).
- Stay: Around Sapporo Station or Odori for easy subway access. Budget ¥6,000–12,000/night for business hotels.
Sapporo in late March won't give you cherry blossoms or summer festivals. What it gives you instead is better: unhurried access to world-class food, fascinating culture in heritage spaces, and the rare pleasure of watching a northern city slowly shake off winter. Sometimes the best time to visit a place is when nobody else thinks to go.
