Every spring and autumn, the laid-back city of Tokushima on Shikoku island transforms into an otaku paradise. Machi Asobi (literally "Town Play") is Japan's largest anime and gaming street festival, and Vol.30 is set for May 16–17, 2026. If you love anime, voice actors, cosplay, or indie games, this is one of the most unique festival experiences Japan has to offer — and most of it is completely free.
What Makes Machi Asobi Special?
Unlike massive convention centers like Comiket or AnimeJapan, Machi Asobi takes over an entire city. The Shinmachi River boardwalk, Bizan mountain ropeway plaza, and streets throughout central Tokushima become open-air stages, screening venues, and gathering spots. It's not just an event — it's the whole town getting in on the fun.
The driving force behind this festival is ufotable, the animation studio famous for Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) and the Fate series. Their headquarters is right here in Tokushima, and their passion for the local community turned a small town gathering into a nationally beloved festival that draws tens of thousands of visitors twice a year.
What to Expect at Vol.30
Voice Actor Talk Shows & Live Performances Machi Asobi is legendary for its voice actor (seiyuu) events. Past editions have featured stars from Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and other hit series. Talk shows are held on open-air stages along the river, creating an intimate atmosphere you won't find at bigger conventions. Arrive early for popular acts — seating fills up fast.
Anime Screenings & Premieres Special screenings, including early previews of upcoming anime, take place at venues around town. ufotable often uses Machi Asobi to debut exclusive footage, so keep your eyes peeled for announcements closer to the date.
Cosplay Paradise The entire Shinmachi riverside area is essentially one giant cosplay-friendly zone. Cosplayers gather along the boardwalk and on the Fureai Bridge, making for incredible photo opportunities with the river and mountains as a backdrop. The relaxed vibe means both seasoned cosplayers and first-timers feel welcome.
Indie Game Demos A growing highlight of Machi Asobi is its indie game showcase. Developers set up booths along the boardwalk where you can try unreleased games, chat directly with creators, and discover your next favorite title. It's a wonderfully grassroots experience.
Manga Artist Signings & Exhibits Manga creators participate in signing sessions and display original artwork. Lines can get long for popular artists, so check the schedule as soon as it's released and plan accordingly.
ufotable Cafe & Food Stalls The ufotable Cafe in Tokushima offers special collaboration menus tied to their latest anime. Along the river, food stalls serve local Tokushima specialties alongside festival treats. Don't miss Tokushima ramen — it's a regional style with a rich, pork-bone-and-soy-sauce broth that's unlike anything you'll find elsewhere.

Getting There:
- By Air: Tokushima Awaodori Airport has flights from Tokyo (Haneda). A bus from the airport to Tokushima Station takes about 30 minutes.
- By Bus: Highway buses run from Tokyo (about 8 hours overnight), Osaka (about 2.5 hours), and Kobe (about 2 hours). This is the most budget-friendly option.
- By Train: Take the Shinkansen to Okayama, then transfer to the JR Uzushio limited express to Tokushima (about 4.5 hours total from Tokyo, 2.5 hours from Osaka).
- Getting Around: The main festival areas are all within walking distance of Tokushima Station (10–15 minutes on foot). The Bizan Ropeway is a short walk south from the Shinmachi River area.
Accommodation Tips: Hotels in Tokushima fill up fast during Machi Asobi. Book as early as possible — ideally 2–3 months ahead. If Tokushima City is sold out, consider staying in Naruto (about 40 minutes by train) or even Takamatsu in Kagawa Prefecture (about 1 hour by express train).
Weather: Mid-May in Tokushima is warm and pleasant, typically 18–25°C. Rain is possible as the rainy season approaches, so pack a light rain jacket. Comfortable walking shoes are a must — you'll be on your feet all day.
Tips from Experience
- Check the schedule early. The official timetable usually drops 1–2 weeks before the event. Popular voice actor shows require numbered tickets distributed on-site in the morning — get there early.
- Bring cash. Many food stalls and merchandise booths are cash-only.
- Climb Bizan. Even if you skip the ropeway, the area around Bizan has event stages and great views. At night, the illuminated Shinmachi River is gorgeous.
- Explore beyond the festival. Tokushima is the gateway to the Iya Valley (one of Japan's last hidden regions), the Naruto whirlpools, and the 88-temple Shikoku Pilgrimage. Consider extending your trip.
- Be respectful with cosplay photos. Always ask before photographing cosplayers. Most are happy to pose, but consent matters.
Why Tokushima?
Machi Asobi isn't just a festival bolted onto a random city. Tokushima embraced ufotable and the anime community, and in return, the festival has revitalized the local economy and put this small Shikoku city on the map for international visitors. There's a genuineness to Machi Asobi that's hard to replicate — the locals welcome fans, the scale is human, and the whole riverside setting makes it feel like a real celebration rather than a corporate expo.
Whether you're a hardcore anime fan or just curious about Japanese pop culture, Machi Asobi Vol.30 is an experience worth traveling for. See you in Tokushima.
