When travelers think of spring in Japan, Tokyo's Meguro River and Kyoto's Philosopher's Path usually come to mind. But two hours north of Tokyo, tucked into a dramatic river gorge in Tochigi Prefecture, a quieter and more atmospheric cherry blossom experience awaits: the Kinugawa Onsen Night Cherry Blossom Illumination "Kinugawa Mankakyo", running from April 3–12, 2026.
Combined with Nikko's UNESCO World Heritage shrines and temples — just 30 minutes away by train — this corner of northern Kanto offers one of the most rewarding spring escapes you can plan from the capital.
Why Kinugawa Onsen in Spring?
Kinugawa Onsen (鬼怒川温泉) has been one of Kanto's premier hot spring resorts since the Edo period, when its alkaline waters were reserved for feudal lords and monks from nearby Nikko's temples. The name itself — "River of Raging Demons" — hints at the area's wild beauty: steep gorges, thundering rapids, and forests that cling to sheer cliff faces.
In early-to-mid April, cherry trees along the Kinugawa River gorge burst into bloom. The Kinugawa Mankakyo (鬼怒川万華郷) illumination transforms the riverside into a kaleidoscope of light, with cherry blossoms reflected in the dark waters below. Unlike Tokyo's crowded hanami spots, here you can stroll along the illuminated paths with space to breathe, the sound of the river rushing beneath you and the scent of sulfur drifting from nearby ryokan baths.
Experiencing the Night Cherry Blossoms
The illumination runs nightly during the festival period, typically from dusk (around 6:00 PM) until 9:00 PM. The best viewing spots are along the riverside walkways near Kinugawa Onsen Station, where cherry trees are lit in soft pink, purple, and white tones. The effect is magical — the lights create a "mankakyo" (kaleidoscope) of shifting colors reflected in the river surface.
Tips for the illumination:
- Arrive early evening and enjoy a riverside walk before full darkness for the best photographic variety
- The area near Kinugawa Koen (Kinugawa Park) offers elevated viewpoints looking down at the illuminated gorge
- Weekday evenings are significantly less crowded than weekends
- Temperature drops sharply after sunset in the gorge — bring a warm layer even if days feel mild
Soaking in the Onsen
After the illumination walk, nothing beats sinking into a hot spring bath. Kinugawa's waters are simple alkaline springs (アルカリ性単純温泉), known for silky-smooth skin benefits and gentle relaxation. Many ryokan offer rotenburo (outdoor baths) overlooking the gorge — imagine soaking under the stars with cherry petals drifting onto the water's surface.
Recommended bathing options:
- Kinugawa Park Hotels — Multiple bath types including an expansive outdoor rock bath with gorge views
- Asaya Hotel — Famous for its panoramic rooftop bath ("Kinu no Yu") offering sweeping valley views
- Day-trip bathing (higaeri) — Several facilities welcome non-staying guests for ¥1,000–2,000, perfect if you're visiting from Nikko for the day
Day Trip to Nikko's World Heritage Sites
Nikko needs no introduction, but spring gives it a special character. The Nikko Kaido (日光街道) — the old highway connecting Nikko to Edo — is lined with cherry trees that create a stunning sakura tunnel for drivers and cyclists. The Nikko Kaido Cherry Tree Avenue is one of Tochigi's most photogenic spring sights.
At the World Heritage core — Toshogu Shrine, Futarasan Shrine, and Rinnoji Temple — spring brings a softer light to the ornate, colorful carvings. The famous Yomeimon Gate shimmers differently when framed by pastel blossoms rather than summer's dense greenery or autumn's fiery maples.
Spring highlights at Nikko:
- Toshogu Shrine — The elaborately carved shrine complex honoring Tokugawa Ieyasu is Japan's most lavish. In spring, the contrast between golden carvings and pink blossoms is extraordinary
- Shinkyo Bridge — The sacred vermillion bridge over the Daiya River is arguably Japan's most photographed bridge, and even more stunning with cherry trees framing it
- Kanmangafuchi Abyss — A scenic gorge walk lined with dozens of mysterious stone Jizo statues. Peaceful, slightly eerie, and beautiful year-round
- Rinnoji Temple — The Sanbutsudo hall contains three massive gold Buddha statues; the temple garden Shoyo-en is lovely in spring
Building Your Itinerary
Option 1: Overnight at Kinugawa (recommended)
- Day 1: Take the Tobu Limited Express "Revaty" from Asakusa Station (about 2 hours). Check into your ryokan, explore Kinugawa town, enjoy the night cherry blossom illumination, then soak in the onsen.
- Day 2: Morning train to Nikko (30 minutes). Spend the day at the World Heritage shrines. Return to Tokyo via Nikko or Kinugawa in the evening.
Option 2: Day trip from Tokyo
Take the first express to Nikko, explore the shrines in the morning, then head to Kinugawa for an afternoon higaeri onsen and evening illumination. Last train back reaches Tokyo by 10 PM.
Access:
- From Asakusa (Tokyo): Tobu Railway Limited Express Revaty Kinu → Kinugawa Onsen (approx. 2h). Revaty Kegon → Tobu Nikko (approx. 1h50min).
- From Shinjuku: JR/Tobu direct limited express to Tobu Nikko (approx. 2h)
- Between Kinugawa and Nikko: Tobu local train, about 30 minutes
- Rail passes: The Tobu All-Nikko Pass (¥4,780 from Asakusa) covers unlimited travel in the area for 4 days including buses
What to Eat
The Nikko-Kinugawa area has its own food culture worth exploring:
- Yuba (tofu skin) — Nikko's signature dish. Try it as yuba soba, yuba donburi, or in elaborate kaiseki courses at temples and restaurants near Toshogu
- Grilled river fish (ayu/iwana) — Freshwater fish grilled on skewers over charcoal at roadside stalls
- Onsen manju — Steamed buns filled with sweet red bean paste, sold at every hot spring town shop
- Tochigi wagyu — The prefecture produces excellent beef, often featured in ryokan dinner courses
- Local craft beer — Nikko Brewing has gained a following for its seasonal ales
Beyond the Main Sights
If you have extra time, consider these side trips:
- Edo Wonderland Nikko Edomura — A Edo-period theme park between Kinugawa and Nikko, great for families
- Tobu World Square — Miniature replicas of 102 famous world buildings at 1/25 scale (quirky but fun)
- Ryuokyo Gorge — A scenic gorge between Kinugawa and Kawaji onsen towns, accessible by a pleasant hiking trail along the river. The spring foliage is especially fresh and green in mid-April.
When to Go
Cherry blossoms in the Kinugawa-Nikko area typically peak in mid-April, about 1–2 weeks later than Tokyo due to the higher elevation. The Kinugawa Mankakyo illumination runs April 3–12, timed to coincide with the bloom. For the best experience, aim for the second week of April when both the illumination and peak blooms overlap.
This trip works beautifully as a 1–2 night escape from Tokyo's springtime crowds. While millions jostle for position along the Meguro River, you'll be soaking in a canyon hot spring, watching cherry petals drift through kaleidoscopic light above a roaring mountain river. That's the kind of hanami memory that lasts.
