Kenrokuen is widely regarded as one of Japan's three great landscape gardens, a title earned over centuries of meticulous design in the castle town of Kanazawa. But visiting in daylight tells only half the story. During Golden Week 2026, the Kanazawa Castle & Kenrokuen Spring Illumination (金沢城・兼六園四季物語 春の段) runs from the evening of May 2 through May 5, offering free after-dark entry to both Kenrokuen and the adjacent Kanazawa Castle Park.
Kenrokuen at Night
The garden's six defining qualities — spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, abundant water, and broad views — are transformed under illumination. The stone lanterns that dot the paths cast soft halos on surrounding moss. The Kotoji Tōrō lantern, Kenrokuen's most photographed feature, stands reflected in the Kasumiga-ike pond under spring lighting. Cherry blossom season is long over by early May, but the garden's maple and pine canopy glows with a deep, saturated green under the warm lamps.
Kanazawa Castle Park
The white-walled Hishi Yagura and Gojikken Nagaya storehouse of the castle park are illuminated from below, their pale plaster walls glowing against the night sky. The park's paths are well-lit and walkable, and the scale of the castle grounds gives the evening a sense of space that many urban light events lack.
Planning Your Visit to Kanazawa
Kanazawa is best experienced as an overnight stay. The Higashi Chaya geisha district, the Omicho fresh fish market, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art are all within walking distance of the castle. An evening illumination visit pairs naturally with a morning of market breakfast and museum exploration the next day.
Getting to Kanazawa
The Hokuriku Shinkansen connects Tokyo to Kanazawa in about 2.5 hours. The Kanazawa Station is linked to the city centre by a frequent loop bus service, with the castle and gardens approximately 20 minutes from the station. The Golden Week period is busy across Kanazawa; book accommodation well in advance.
Illumination Hours and Entry
Nighttime free entry to both Kenrokuen and Kanazawa Castle Park runs from approximately 18:00 to 21:00 during the illumination period. Regular daytime admission to Kenrokuen (¥320 for adults) applies outside these hours.
Tips for Visitors
- Arrive around dusk (just after 18:00) to see the transition from daylight to the lit garden — this is the most photogenic hour.
- The stone paths can be uneven; wear sensible shoes.
- Dress in layers — Kanazawa evenings in early May can still be cool, especially near the ponds.
- The city's Omicho Market opens early and is the best breakfast stop in Kanazawa before heading to the garden.
