Hinomisaki Shrine
Izumo, Japan
🛕 Shrine
Hinomisaki Shrine stands at the western tip of the Shimane Peninsula, about a twenty-minute drive beyond Izumo Taisha. It is made up of two shrines in one vermilion-lacquered complex: the lower Hishizumi-no-miya, dedicated to Amaterasu, and the upper Kami-no-miya, dedicated to Susanoo. The present buildings were rebuilt in the 1630s on the order of the third Tokugawa shogun and are designated Important Cultural Properties. Where Ise is said to guard Japan by day, Hinomisaki is said to guard it by night.
