Yamadera (Risshaku-ji)

Yamadera, formally known as Risshaku-ji Temple, is a serene mountain temple complex in Yamagata Prefecture, dramatically set into the cliffs and surrounded by ancient cedars. Founded in 860 CE, the temple is reached by climbing over 1,000 stone steps carved into the mountainside, rewarding visitors with breathtaking views of the valley below. The haiku poet Matsuo Basho immortalized the temple in his famous verse describing the profound silence broken only by the sound of cicadas.
