Hikone Castle is one of Japan's few original surviving castles, designated as a National Treasure. Built in the early 17th century by the powerful Ii clan, the castle boasts some of the finest surviving examples of early Edo period architecture. Surrounded by cherry blossom trees and an elegant garden called Genkyuen, it offers a complete picture of feudal Japanese castle culture.
