One of Japan's most important and oldest Buddhist temples, founded in the 7th century. Zenkoji is home to the first Buddhist statue ever brought to Japan and welcomes visitors of all faiths. The temple's main hall features a famous underground passage called Okaidan where visitors walk in complete darkness to find the 'Key to Paradise'. The approach road (Nakamise) is lined with traditional shops and restaurants.
