One of the two head temples of Soto Zen Buddhism, founded in 1244 by Dogen Zenji. Nestled in a cedar forest in the mountains of Fukui, this sprawling complex of over 70 buildings connected by covered corridors is still an active training monastery for monks. Visitors can experience zazen meditation and shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine).
