Untoan Temple

A renowned Zen temple in Minamiuonuma, Niigata, famous for the saying 'Have you walked the grounds of Untoan?' Stone tablets inscribed with the Lotus Sutra lie beneath the approach path from the red gate to the main hall. Walking over them is believed to bring blessings. The temple is closely linked to Uesugi Kagekatsu and Naoe Kanetsugu, who studied here as children.
