Aoshima Shrine

Aoshima Shrine sits on a tiny subtropical island in Miyazaki Bay, connected to the mainland by a long footbridge. The island and its shrine are surrounded by unusual washboard rock formations called devil's washboard or Oni no Sentakuita, sculpted by millions of years of wave erosion. The shrine is dedicated to the sea deities and is closely associated with the legend of the mythological figure Yamasachi-hiko.
