A UNESCO World Heritage temple in Uji, famous for its Phoenix Hall (Hoo-do) which is depicted on the Japanese 10-yen coin. Built in 1053 during the Heian period, its architecture represents the Pure Land Buddhist paradise and houses a stunning gilded Amida Buddha statue.
