Ise Grand Shrine is Japan's most sacred Shinto shrine, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, the mythological ancestor of the imperial family. The sprawling shrine complex in Mie Prefecture consists of over 125 individual shrines and is rebuilt every 20 years in an ancient ceremony called Shikinen Sengu. The surrounding Okage Yokocho shopping street offers visitors a taste of the traditional Edo-period atmosphere.
