Daimonji Bonfire

About this event

The Daimonji Bonfire at Chuson-ji in Hiraizumi is inspired by the famous Kyoto tradition, in which the character for "great" is set ablaze on a hillside to send off the spirits of ancestors at the close of Obon. The bonfire glows warmly against the night sky, and its reflection in the tranquil grounds of this World Heritage site creates a deeply moving farewell to the souls of the departed. A poignant and beautiful ceremony unique to the spirit of Tohoku.
