Sumiyoshi Taisha begins the new year with the Hatsumode pilgrimage and the ancient Wakamizu-no-gi ceremony, in which sacred water is drawn for the first time in the new year to offer to the deities. This cherished ritual symbolizes purification and the hope for a year of good health and prosperity.
