About this event
Kenninji Temple observes the passage into the new year with traditional Zen ceremonies on December 31st. The temple bell tolls 108 times to symbolize the purification of the 108 earthly desires in Buddhist teaching. The solemn atmosphere of Kyoto's oldest Zen temple makes this a deeply moving way to welcome the new year.
