About this event
Gozan Okuribi is one of Kyoto's most iconic events, held annually on August 16 to bid farewell to the spirits of ancestors at the end of Obon. Five giant bonfires are lit on the mountains surrounding Kyoto, forming kanji characters and shapes: Dai (large), Myo-Ho (wondrous dharma), Funagata (boat), Hidari Dai (left large), and Torii (shrine gate). The fires are lit sequentially starting at 8 PM, creating a breathtaking spectacle visible across the city.
