Shinkō-sai Procession Festival

The Shinkosai Procession Festival is the dramatic highlight of the Gion Festival, in which the three sacred mikoshi of Yasaka Shrine are carried out of the shrine and through the streets of Kyoto to their temporary resting place. Accompanied by crowds of bearers in traditional costume and enthusiastic cheering from spectators, the procession creates an exhilarating atmosphere of devotion and civic festivity. It is one of the most powerful expressions of Kyoto's living festival culture.
