The Sumiyoshi Festival is the grand summer festival of Sumiyoshi Taisha, one of Japan's most ancient and important shrines. The highlight is the Otaue sacred rice planting ritual procession and the mikoshi river crossing, in which the portable shrine is carried across the Yamato River — a deeply symbolic act of purification and renewal. With over 1,800 years of history, it is one of the most significant religious celebrations in the Osaka region.
