Grand Purification (Chinowa Ring Walk)

The Grand Purification Ceremony at Yasaka Shrine marks the year's midpoint with a ritual to cleanse the accumulated sins and impurities of the past six months. The highlight is the Chinowa, a large ring woven from sacred cogon grass through which worshippers pass in a figure-eight pattern to receive purification. Walking through the ring is one of Kyoto's most beloved midsummer traditions.
