The Sacred Rice Planting Festival (Otaue Shinji) at Sumiyoshi Taisha is an ancient agricultural rite in which shrine maidens ceremonially plant rice seedlings in the shrine's sacred paddy field. This UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage is a prayer for an abundant harvest and reflects Japan's deep spiritual connection to rice cultivation.
