About this event

The Okera-sai Festival is one of Kyoto's most beloved New Year traditions, held at Yasaka Shrine on New Year's Eve through the morning of New Year's Day. Visitors light their kadomatsu pine rope from the sacred okera (white atractylodes) bonfire and carry the flame home to cook the first meal of the year, a symbol of good fortune.
