Mizuakari (Water Lanterns)

Mizuakari is a magical evening event in which hundreds of handmade bamboo and washi paper lanterns are lit along the waterways and streets around Kumamoto Castle. The soft glow of the water lanterns reflects in the moats and rivers, creating an atmosphere of ethereal beauty unique to this event. It is one of the most visually enchanting autumn evenings in Kyushu, drawing visitors who come simply to walk slowly and take in the light.
