The Sumida River Fireworks Festival is one of Tokyo's oldest and most beloved summer events, with a history stretching back to the Edo period. Two competing groups of pyrotechnicians light up the sky above the Sumida River with over 20,000 shells in a breathtaking display that draws nearly a million spectators to the riverside. Finding the perfect vantage point along the river, at a rooftop bar, or aboard one of the traditional yakatabune boats is all part of the quintessential Tokyo summer experience.
