About this event
The Mikoshi Washing Ceremony is a purification rite in which the sacred portable shrine of Yasaka's deity is ritually cleansed in the waters of the Kamo River ahead of the Gion Festival. Priests carry the heavy mikoshi in a solemn torchlit procession down to the riverbank, where purification rites are performed. The ceremony marks a key moment in the spiritual preparation for the grand festival celebrations.
