Nagasaki Shoronagashi (Spirit Boat Procession) 2026

A uniquely dramatic Obon tradition where families carry handmade spirit boats through the streets of Nagasaki to send off the souls of the deceased. The procession is accompanied by deafening firecrackers, bells chanting and cries of 'doi doi'. Unlike the serene lantern floating seen elsewhere in Japan, Nagasaki's version is loud, fiery, and deeply emotional.
