About this event
Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto's Gion district comes alive on New Year's Eve with the traditional Joya-sai festival. The ceremony includes sacred Shinto rites and the distribution of sacred fire to the community, continuing a tradition stretching back centuries. The shrine remains open throughout the night, welcoming the throngs of worshippers who arrive for hatsumode at midnight.
