About this event
The Ekinosha Natsukoeshi Festival marks the official close of the Gion Festival at a small subsidiary shrine within the Yasaka Shrine grounds dedicated to the deity of pestilence. A chinowa grass ring is set up for a final purification walk, symbolically sealing away the evil spirits that the Gion Festival was originally held to appease. With this ceremony, Kyoto officially says farewell to its greatest festival for another year.
