About this event
The Gion Festival is one of Japan's three great festivals and Kyoto's most iconic event, spanning the entire month of July. Originating over 1,100 years ago as a ritual to appease the gods during a deadly plague, it centers on the spectacular procession of towering floats known as yamaboko. Evening markets, traditional music, and ancient ceremonies bring the whole city to life throughout the month.
