Hakata Okunchi

About this event

The harvest thanksgiving festival of Kushida Shrine, held since the ninth century and counted with Nagasaki and Karatsu as one of the three great Okunchi of Japan. A portable shrine drawn by an ox leads a procession of children in Heian costume, chigo pages and a brass band through the streets of Hakata, and the shrine grounds fill with dedicatory performances.
