Purification/Going through the grass ring

The summer purification ceremony at Sumiyoshi Taisha combines the ancient Oharae rite with the beloved Chinowa ring walk. On the last day of June, worshippers pass through the large grass ring at this historic shrine to symbolically shed impurities from the first half of the year. With a history of over 1,800 years, Sumiyoshi Taisha is one of the most atmospheric places to experience this midsummer tradition.
