About this event
The Oharae Great Purification ceremony at Meiji Shrine on December 31st is a major Shinto ritual to cleanse accumulated sins and impurities from the year. Worshippers receive paper dolls called hitogata to symbolically transfer their troubles before they are ritually disposed of. This powerful purification rite prepares the heart and soul for the fresh start of a new year.
