Juya memorial service

About this event

The Juya Memorial Service at Zojoji Temple is a solemn Buddhist ceremony held over ten nights (juya), in which continuous sutra chanting and memorial prayers are offered for the benefit of all departed souls. Rooted in the Pure Land Buddhist tradition of prayerful perseverance, the ceremony has been held at Jodo sect temples for centuries. It is a deeply meditative and spiritually charged event during the quiet turning of autumn into winter.
